Politics by nature is a fighting ground. Even on issues the nation agrees on, politicians and overly politically inclined people cannot find agreement on solutions because the fight is often more important than the win. When we take our lead as a society from our politicians, we cannot be surprised when we find ourselves in a constant battle. Somewhere along the way, too many people started viewing their favorite politicians as fierce leaders instead of the humble public servants they should be. In Jesus’ life, politicians were even more powerful and even more cruel to their populace. But Jesus did not call his followers to overthrow them; he simply called them to follow him above all others. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” We walk in darkness when follow people over Jesus, causing us to refuse to forgive others, deny others the same love that Jesus shows us, and allow sin to dictate our actions. However, our capacity to forgive and love has no end when we follow Jesus’ lead instead of other people’s. Today, with everything going on in this country, remember that Jesus is still on the throne and by following him, we will have the light of life.

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12 ESV
