The hearings of Amy Coney Barrett continued yesterday and are eliciting strong reactions on both sides of the aisle. With this going on and a presidential election coming in mere weeks, tensions are near a boiling point. We’ve seen true hate acted out in the streets this year and even more expressed online. Hate has no place in our nation but it will not be stamped out until it is erased from the hearts that foster it. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Hate simmers far too much in hearts across the country, even some of those who confess with their mouths that they love Jesus. There’s no such thing as a hateful follower of Christ, however it is possible to be hateful but still know Jesus as Lord. The difference is in following: to follow him requires that we deny ourselves - relinquishing our earthly desires — and carry our cross behind him daily. In such an effort, there is no room nor time for hate; what’s more, Jesus would not consider a hateful heart to be one after his own. When we follow, we will be led to places that we would not have gone before and out of love, will be called to act. Today, cast out any hate from your heart and follow Jesus where he leads.

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23 ESV
